Edmonds Closes Year With Win Streak
LYNNWOOD -- The Edmonds College women's basketball ended the year on a two-game winning streak after coming back from a 20-point deficit to defeat Everett CC 74-65 Saturday in Seaview Gym. Edmonds College said goodbye to six sophomores who were playing in their last game in a Triton uniform: Melissa Schwab, Annelise Coxeff, Tania-Velasco-Bono, Jasmine McEachin, Danielle Smythe and Maile Keanu.
Smythe led the way for the Triton rally, scoring 27 points on a 9-for-17 shooting night which included six 3-pointers. Keanu added 15 points and 7 rebounds with both McEachin and Ellie Greene contributing 14 points apiece. McEachin had 10 rebounds and 7 assists with Greene grabbing 13 boards.
The Edmonds College win looked very unlikely early on when Ron Newton and Shayla Ball's squad fell behind 36-16. Entering the break the deficit was down to 16 points at 36-20. The Tritons would come out in the second and score 54 points over the final 20 minutes of play, however, to shock the Trojans and send the Triton faithful home with a win.
The comeback started slowly but built momentum as the second half wore on. A Smythe 3-pointer at 14:32 got the Tritons to within 10 points of EvCC. A pair of McEachin free throws at 9:20 pulled Edmonds College to within three points (50-47). Everett scored on its next two possessions but buckets by Smythe and Velasco-Bono had the Tritons back to within three. A Smythe trey tied the score at 54-54 with 7:04 on the clock.
Greene sank a jumper to give Edmonds its first lead of the game, 56-55. The Trojans stormed back to take a 60-58 advantage at 5:31 when Kylie Smith hit a 3-pointer. A field goal by Kelsy Rasmussen then gave Everett a four-point lead.
After a Trojan free throw, Smythe made 3-pointer and Maile Keanu laid one off the glass to even the score at 63-63. Velasco-Bono sank a shot for Edmonds College, Smythe made two at the line and McEachin followed with a jumper. Suddenly it was Edmonds in front 69-63 at 2:17. Greene iced the game at the one minute mark when she swished a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining on the shot clock.
Edmonds (3-21, 2-12 North) shot 41 percent in the game and made 7-of-18 3-pointers. Everett (8-19, 5-9) made just 32 percent of its shots in the loss.
Thanks to all of our sophomores who hung tough despite a challenging year. Also special thanks to Ron Newton who stepped in, bringing much-needed stability and leadership. Another thank you goes to Shayla Ball who held the team together and went way beyond the call of duty. Coach Ball has decided to pursue other opportunities next season and will be missed!
Tritons Claim League Win
LYNNWOOD – The Edmonds College women's basketball team notched a 58-53 victory over Olympic College Wednesday night in Seaview Gym. It was the first league victory for the Tritons this year.
Edmonds College never trailed against the visiting Rangers. The Edmonds ladies jumped out in front 10-4, led by two jumpers from Tania Velasco-Bono, and were leading 29-20 heading into halftime. A steal and lay-up by Dani Smythe opened up the second stanza for Edmonds. For the next five minutes the Tritons poured it on, taking a 41-22 advantage.
The game turned out to be far from in-control, however. Edmonds College starting forward Ellie Greene had to sit out much of the second half due to foul trouble and the Tritons began to get sloppy with the ball.
With 10 minutes to go the score was 43-33 Edmonds. That gap was narrowed to four points (49-42) at the 2:30 mark. Greene, back in, sank two free throws with two minutes remaining to temporarily stop the bleeding. The Rangers kept up their furious late charge – which included three 3-pointers by Leahi Lindsey – closing to just one point (52-51) and putting Edmonds College's potential victory in danger.
Point guard Jasmine McEachin then threw a risky cross-court pass to Smythe who easily laid the ball in and give her team a three-point cushion with a minute on the clock. OC missed on its next possession with McEachin being fouled and sinking pair of free throws. Those put Edmonds up 56-51.
Mariah Frazier made two free throws for Olympic but Smythe responded by sinking two at the stripe for Edmonds College on the next possession to ice the much-need win.
Mceachin led Edmonds with 16 points and 9 assists. Smythe added 14 points and 5 rebounds. Greene and Maile Keanu each had 9 points with Tania Velasco-Bono contributing 8 points and 5 boards.
The Tritons wrap up the year with a home contest versus Everett on Saturday, Feb. 22. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
Edmonds College Can't Sustain Rally at Shoreline
box scoreSHORELINE – Edmonds rallied from a 16-point deficit to take a late, one-point lead at Shoreline CC Saturday, but the home team Dolphins would prevail 63-58.
The Edmonds College ladies found themselves in an early hole, though the Dolphins seemed to be making every shot even rushed and off-balanced ones. That deficit was 16 points midway into the first half.
Triton guard Jasmine McEachin took matters into her own hands and led Edmonds College back to within five points (31-26) at intermission.
Edmonds continued to play well when the second stanza started and was twice one-point better than the Dolphins late. Unfortunately McEachin would have to sit for a couple of possessions after she was fouled hard driving to the hoop. That seemed to change the momentum and SCC would end the contest on a late run to win by five.
McEachin led Edmonds College with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Danielle Smythe and Maile Keanu each contributed 13 points for the Tritons with Ellie Greene adding 8 points.
Edmonds is home twice this coming week. On Wednesday the team welcomes Olympic College with Everett CC coming to Seaview on Saturday. Both contests start at 5 p.m. Saturday will be the final game of the year for Edmonds College.
Tritons Lose Big at Bellevue
BELLEVUE – The Edmonds College women's basketball team suffered its worst loss of the year to Bellevue College Wednesday night, 80-33. Danielle Smythe had 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Tritons, tops for her team in both categories.
Edmonds turned the ball over 33 times which led to 30 Bulldog points.
Bellevue College played nine in the North tilt, all of whom recorded at least two points. Alexis Berrysmith had a game high 16 points for the first-place Bulldogs (17-7, 10-1 league).
The Tritons play their final road game on Saturday, when they travel to nearby Shoreline CC. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
Edmonds Loses to Whatcom
LYNNWOOD -- The Edmonds College women's basketball team lost to visiting Whatcom 70-50 Saturday night in Seaview Gymnasium despite 18 points from sophomore Danielle Smythe. Fellow sophomore Jasmine McEachin contributed 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in the loss.
Leading the charge for the Orcas was Kayla Tiemiersma who had 27 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tritons fell behind early and were down at intermission 39-27. Edmonds made a run and closed the gap to 4 but the Orcas finished the game strong to win by 20.
The first place Whatcom squad improved to 13-7 overall, 9-1 league. Edmonds College is still looking for its first league win (0-10).
Edmonds is on the road twice next week starting with a 5:30 p.m. tilt Wednesday, February 12, at Bellevue before heading over to nearby Shoreline for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday.
Late-Starting Tritons Lose to Peninsula
LYNNWOOD – The Tritons lost to visiting Peninsula College 65-52 Wednesday night in Seaview Gym. The NWAACC North match up with the Pirates encapsulated the entire season for the Edmonds women's basketball squad – the team plays well for 25-30 minutes but does next to nothing for the rest of the time.
The Tritons failed to score for the first five minutes of Wednesday's game against PC and were behind by 21 points before waking up and going on a run to end the first half. Edmonds trailed at the break by just eight points and closed the gap to just four points a few minutes into the second stanza.
Peninsula held off the Triton charge before another Edmonds College run had the team
within four points again – 56-52 – with just over two minutes remaining. Those would
be the final points for Edmonds, however, as the Pirates closed out the game with
a 9-0 run.
Edmonds College's turned the ball over just 16 times against PC and matched the Pirates
with 40 rebounds, but the Tritons were only 3 of 14 from 3-point range and just 5
of 11 from the free throw line.
Leading Edmonds in the loss was sophomore guard Jasmine McEachin who had 19 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman guard Ellie Greene contributed 15 points and 6 boards. Sophomore guard Dani Smythe added 8 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore forward Tania Velasco-Bono had 6 points and 6 boards with sophomore forward Maile Keanu adding 5 points and 9 boards.
A trio of Pirates scored in double-figures Wednesday paced by 18 points from Madison Pilster. Jonelle Staveland had 15 points with Alison Knowles adding 13 points.
The loss dropped Edmonds College to 1-18 overall, 0-9 league. The Pirates improved to 8-11, 5-4 North.
Next up for Edmonds is first-place Whatcom CC on Saturday. The Tritons and Orcas tip off in Seaview Gym at 5 pm
Edmonds Drops Road Tilt at SVC
box scoreMOUNT VERNON – The Edmonds College women's basketball teams lost to Skagit Valley 81-52 Saturday night. The Tritons had an early lead but the Cardinals were just too deep and used a late first half run to take control of the NWAACC North contests
Four Tritons scored in double-figures led by 16 points from Tania Velasco-Bono. Ellie Greene and Jasmine McEachin each had 11 points with Danielle Smythe adding 10 points.
The game was the last for freshman guard Haruka Miyagi who graduated on Friday and will return to Japan on Monday. Miyagi had 5 points and 7 assists for Edmonds Saturday.
Sydney Brown paced Skagit Valley with 19 points.
The Tritons will return home to take on the Peninsula Pirates on Wednesday. Tip-off in Seaview Gym is at 5 p.m.
Edmonds College Can't Hang On To Road Lead
EVERETT -- The Edmonds College women's basketball team held a lead for much of Saturday's North tilt at Everett but foul trouble and turnovers came back to haunt the Tritons who would lose 73-66. The loss leaves Edmonds College still looking for its first league win of the 201-3-14 campaign.
Danielle Smythe arguably had her best game in an Edmonds College uniform, scoring 23 points and pulling in 11 rebounds. The sophomore from Chelan HS went 10 of 21. Miley Keanu also had a solid night with a 17-point, 11-rebound effort. Jasmine McEachin contributed 14 points and 8 boards but would foul out.
Unfortunately, the remaining Tritons didn't add much to the offense Saturday as three starters combined to go just 3 for 23 from the field. Another tough stat for the Edmonds College squad was making just 9 of 17 free throws. A positive stat was that the Tritons dominated the boards, enjoying a 62-41 advantage.
Kelsy Rassmussen had 21 points for the Trojans with Ashley Albertson adding 16 points and 12 boards.
Edmonds has a few days off to regroup before heading to Skagit Valley on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
Edmonds College Still Looking for First League Win
BREMERTON – Olympic College defeated Edmonds College 64-51 in a North Region tilt Wednesday night in Bremerton. The Rangers built a 16-point lead at halftime, and used a balanced scoring attack to stymie the Tritons. Mariah Frazier led OC with 16 points and 14 rebounds. OC was also 18 of 19 from the free-throw line.
Edmonds had three players score in double figures – Jasmine McEachin (12 points), Danielle Smythe (10 points), and Tania Velasco-Bono (10 points) – but couldn't notch their first league win.
Edmonds College (0-6, 1-15) will be at Everett on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Frustrating Night for the Tritons
LYNNWOOD – The Edmonds College women's basketball lost a big lead and the game to Shoreline CC Saturday evening in Seaview Gym, 64-58. The Tritons coughed up a 14-point lead by committing 29 turnovers and by failing to score on over 20 midgame possessions against with the visiting Dolphins.
What was once a 27-13 first half lead became a 36-29 second half deficit after a 23-2 Shoreline run. Edmonds would fall behind by 12 points in the second half, yet still managed to climb back into contention late and trailed by just two points, 59-57, with just over a minute remaining. The comeback was capped by a 3-pointer from freshman guard Haruka Miyagi.
Shoreline got a big bucket from Genia Taylor, however, and made its free throws down the stretch to hold onto the win.
Edmonds shot just 25 percent from the field Saturday with 26 of the team's points coming at the line. Miyagi and Ellie Greene each had 12 points in the loss with Jasmine McEachin and Danielle Smythe each contributing 10 points. McEachin and Velasco-Bono pulled down 14 and 12 rebounds, respectively.
Taylor led all scorers with 25 points and also had 18 rebounds. Breyanna Dutro added 20 points and 9 boards.
Edmonds College is on the road for three straight, starting on Wednesday, January 22, with a tilt at Olympic College. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
Tritons Finish Strong but Can't Overcome Early Deficit
LYNNWOOD – Edmonds College outscored visiting Bellevue College 30-19 over the final 20 minutes of play Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to overcome another sluggish start as the Tritons fell by a score of 58-45.
Edmonds College has struggled out of the gate recently and Wednesday was no different. The Bulldogs started out on a 10-0 run and led at one point 17-5. The two teams entered intermission with BC leading 39-15.
Whatever Edmonds College coaches Ron Newton and Shayla Ball said during halftime must have worked as the Tritons looked like a completely different team in the second. Edmonds came out strong, cutting a 24-point deficit to just 13. The Bulldogs righted the ship, however, and retook control of the game before a late Triton run at the end.
Besides the slow start, 28 turnovers and getting outrebounded (45-29) really hurt Edmonds College against the athletic BC squad.
Danielle Smythe led Edmonds with 12 points with Haruka Miyagi adding 9 points. Ellie Greene had 8 points. Jasmine McEachin chipped in with 7 points. Newcomer Maile Keanu added 5 points and 5 boards.
Three Bulldogs scored in double-figures, led by Alexis Berry smith and Jori Hall's 12 points.
The Tritons welcome Shoreline CC on Saturday, January 18. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
Edmonds Drops Contest at Whatcom
BELLINGHAM -- Jasmine McEachin scored 19 points for Edmonds College but it wasn't enough Saturday at Whatcom. The Orcas outscored the Tritons in both halves to come away with a 60-51 victory.
Danielle Smythe contributed 16 points for the Tritons with Ellie Green adding 10 points and 5 rebounds. The rest of the starting lineup combined for just 4 points, however, on a 0-10 effort from the field.
Kayle Tiemersma had 18 points and 9 boards for the Orcas with Kortney Grattic and Mikayla Brown adding 15 and 11 points respectively. Nikki Gibert pulled down 12 rebounds in the win.
Edmonds is at home for its next two contests, hosting Bellevue on Wednesday and Shoreline on Saturday. Both games start at 5 p.m.
Tritons Can't Overcome Slow Start
PORT ANGELES – The Lady Tritons couldn't overcome a slow start, losing to Peninsula 71-57 Wednesday evening. Edmonds fell behind after a late first-half surge by the Pirates and entered the break trailing 35-22. Edmonds College were only one point behind the Pirates in the second half (36-35).
Edmonds fell to 1-11 overall, 0-2 in the NWAACC North while Peninsula improved to 2-3, 1-1 North.
Jasmine McEachin led the Tritons with 18 points and 9 rebounds with Danielle Smythe scoring 15 points and Ellie Greene adding 12 points and 9 boards. Both Haruka Miyagi and Tania Velasco-Bono scored 6 points.
Peninsula's Alison Knowles was top scorer in the game with 25 points.
Edmonds will be at Whatcom on Saturday for a North tilt that starts at 4 p.m.
Edmonds Falls to SVC in League Opener
LYNNWOOD -- Edmonds College battled but would eventually fall 69-63 to Skagit Valley in the 2013-14 NWAACC North Opener Saturday night in Seaview Gym. Edmonds College fell to 1-10 overall 0-1 North while SVC improved to 9-4, 1-0 North.
Sophomore Tania Velasco-Bono's double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds paced the Tritons. Soph Danielle Smythe, making her season debut, added 19 points -- 17 of which came in the first half.
Edmonds College surprised the visiting Cardinals by jumping out to a 17-9 lead early on. SVC clawed back to even the score at 28-all late in the stanza but Edmonds closed the opening half with a 5-0 run and headed into the break up 43-40.
The contest slowed down considerably in the second. The Cardinals would outscore the Tritons 29-20 over the final 20 minutes, partly due to Edmonds College's foul troubles that kept Smythe and Jasmine McEachin -- both starters -- for much of the period, and the lack of depth by the Tritons who began the game with eight players -- two of whom are soccer players who recently joined the cager squad.
Still, Edmonds had its chances. The game was tied at 63-63, but the Tritons failed to score over the final three minutes.
Freshmen Ellie Greene and Haruka Miyagi contributed 10 and 8 points respectively. McEachin had 7 points and 6 boards in the loss for Edmonds.
Linda Wilson had 17 points for SVC, with Sydney Brown scoring 15 and Samantha Kalleigh adding 13.
Edmonds College is on the road for its next two tilts, heading over to Peninsula on Wednesday and then to Whatcom on Saturday.
