We are a recognized leader in providing internship placements in the clinical mental health counseling field in the State of Washington.
Our mission is to provide comprehensive, compassionate, social justice focused, and culturally responsive counseling services to enhance student wellness. Our staff is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and affirming space for all students and community members.
Our clinical internship training program is designed for Masters level counseling students in their final year of a graduate counseling or counseling-related program.
The Counseling and Resource Center at Edmonds College is an approved internship site with the following graduate counseling programs:
- Antioch University
- Bastyr University
- Seattle University
- The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology
- Seattle Pacific University
We are currently in hybrid operations (in person and remote).
Counseling Interns typically work an average of 15-20 hours per week in the Counseling and Resource Center for one calendar/academic year.
Weekly staff meetings/trainings are required, in addition to weekly clinical supervision.
Weekly staff meetings are on Thursday's from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Professional development opportunities are offered and counseling interns are strongly encouraged to participate.

1. Two Letters of Recommendation
We encourage you to begin by asking for letters of recommendations because this often takes the longest.
Letters of Recommendation will be accepted from:
• Your previous and current graduate school instructors and/or
• Your previous and current supervisors (clinical and non clinical)
Please do not submit letters of recommendation from your personal therapist.
2. Cover letter
Please provide responses to the following questions within the cover letter
1. What led you to a career in mental health counseling?
2. Why are you seeking an internship in a community college setting?
3. What could you bring in particular to the Counseling Center and the students we serve?

Tuesday, March 1, 1-3:30 p.m.

Our clinical externship training program is designed for those who have completed a Masters level counseling or counseling-related degree and are pursuing completion of licensure hours required with the State of Washington.
Our externship offers a very unique opportunity. Externs will get to experience a small private practice feel (small, tight-knit team, small caseload, brief notes, ability to see some clients longer term, very supportive and nurturing environment) but will gain the wealth of experience similar to that of working in community mental health. Our client population is extremely diverse in terms of age, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, and mental health condition.
The overall objective of the externship is to help each trainee develop a clearer professional identity as well as more advanced clinical skills. Externs will have the opportunity to be immersed in an incredibly supportive and diverse environment that will serve as an excellent segue to future professional life The staff at Edmonds College possesses a wide variety of clinical interests and theoretical orientations, and is deeply committed to providing an enriching and comprehensive clinical experience to trainees.
Additionally, this is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the mental health field, build hours toward licensure, and obtain free clinical supervision from one of our experienced Licensed Mental Health Supervisors. It could also be a pathway to obtaining heavily sought after counseling positions in postsecondary educational settings.
- 9 months (mid Sept.-early June )
- Minimum of 13 hours per week
- Unpaid (no stipend offered)
Externs will have the opportunity to experience the following:
- Mental health and career counseling
- Short and long term counseling
- Observe and co-facilitate counseling and psychoeducational groups
- Crisis intervention and risk assessment
- Work with diverse populations: students of color, immigrants/refugees, veterans, international students, first generation, LGBTQ, students with varied socio-economic status, age, and abilities.
- Manageable caseload and minimal paperwork
- Participate in staff trainings and retreats
- Opportunity to develop mental/community health presentation to present to groups on
In addition to their clinical experiences, trainees will receive the following educational and supervision experiences:
- Individual supervision (1 hour per week)
- Group supervision/case conference (periodically through the training year)
- Regular professional trainings
- Training in interpreting career related assessments with clients
- Training in Social Justice Multicultural Counseling Competencies
