CCLS 100: Steps to Success

Credits: Maximum of 2.0 possible

Students, new and continuing, receive an orientation to success strategies and campus resources, with assignments that help pave the way to that success. Discuss learning styles, instructors' expectations, time management, introduction to eLearning tools, and more. S/U grade only.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Navigate college resources, advising, and college support systems.
  2. Describe the College-Wide Abilities and their importance to student success.
  3. Identify strengths and barriers to success, using self-assessment techniques, and target areas for further development.
  4. Develop goals and design an action plan for continued educational success.
  5. Assess learning style preference(s) and identify strategies that maximize personal learning styles.
  6. Utilize college technology to access student data, class information, communication systems, instruction, and instructional support.

CCLS 105: Choosing A Major/Career

Credits: Maximum of 2.0 possible

Identify and examine your motivators, dependable strengths, experiences, skills, personality, values, and needs that affect choosing a major and/or making career and life decisions. Discover your best fit career options and design an action plan. S/U grade only.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Inventory relevant experiences, transferable and job-specific skills, interests, motivators, values, resilience, and strengths and describe how these contribute to college major and career choices.
  2. Navigate and utilize on-campus departments, contacts, and processes, and online and community resources, to research college major and career descriptions, requirements, and occupational outlook.
  3. Compare and describe self-assessment with college major and career research to determine compatible, realistic career paths.
  4. Design an action plan integrating self-knowledge and research to progress toward current and future educational and career goals.

CCLS 106: Express Career Planning

Credits: Maximum of 1.0 possible

Short-term class uses personality and interest inventories and assignments to help generate career possibilities for you to research and consider. You will also develop an action plan for the next step on your path to career satisfaction. S/U grade only.

CCLS 111: Career and Life Planning

Credits: Maximum of 3.0 possible

Use critical thinking skills, group interaction and assignments to explore and analyze values, skills, interests, and goals. Examine job trends and best fit careers. Includes interest and personality inventories to guide research and analysis. S/U grade only.

CCLS 116: Test-Taking Success

Credits: Maximum of 2.0 possible

Increase confidence in confronting and reducing test anxiety, learn coping strategies, and apply skills to facilitate academic and personal success. S/U grade only.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Identify learning style and apply to studying course material for test preparation.
  2. Utilize autobiography and self-assessment to identify strengths, resiliency, and history of test anxiety to develop and outline coping strategies.
  3. Define locus of control and describe its potential impact on test performance.
  4. Describe characteristics of a successful study environment and study schedule, and design and implement a study plan.
  5. List and apply techniques for enhancing memory, studying, taking notes, and steps for successful test taking.
  6. Categorize the types and causes of test anxiety, and describe and apply stress-management and anxiety-reduction techniques.

COPSY 055: Special Topics in Counseling Psychology

Credits: 4

Explore issues from counseling psychology related to personal, interpersonal, and professional growth. Topics might include self-actualization, stress management, overcoming math or test anxiety, assertiveness, self-esteem, work relationships, life satisfaction, and improving relationships.

Discover the effects of personality type on leadership, inspiration, and success in career, teamwork, and personal relationships. Learn about strengths and areas for growth, and increase understanding of other people.

  1. Assess personality type preference using Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory and self-evaluation.
  2. Describe basic personality type theory and application and identify characteristics of the 16 MBTI personality types.
  3. Select and apply appropriate type language to communicate with different personality types.
  4. Analyze personality strengths and areas for improvement.

COPSY 099: Increasing Happiness

Credits: 2

Apply theory, research, and practical techniques from positive psychology, counseling, and cognitive psychology fields to learn how to increase happiness and satisfaction with life, career, and relationships.

COPSY 101: Personality and Communication

Find out how personality differences impact communication in work and personal relationships. Develop knowledge and techniques for increased understanding and improved speaking and listening skills. Uses personality inventory and group interaction for practicing new skills. S/U grade only.

Learn about types of love, myths about love, characteristics of healthy relationships and red flags of unhealthy ones. Examine the power of self image, and ways to improve it, to create and enhance positive, loving relationships. S/U grade only.

  2. Describe the basic theory that underlies love and various types of loving relationships.
