General Education Development (GED®) - Course Descriptions

GED 004: Spanish GED

Credits: 5.00

This is a structured course to help Spanish-speaking students demonstrate competencies in operations with positive and negative numbers, rules of exponents, square and cube roots, scientific notation, solving PEMDAS, basic concepts of probability and statistics, data analysis, and geometry of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. This course allows students to learn new problem solving skills in preparation for passing the official Spanish Mathematical Reasoning GED® test. Completion of PREP 14 or advisor placement into GED 4 is recommended.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate improvement in one or more of the following areas: operations with positive and negative numbers, rules of exponents, square and cube roots, scientific notation, solving PEMDAS, basic concepts of probability and statistics, data analysis, and geometry of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects.
  2. Assess and build upon current abilities, learning characteristics, and styles.
  3. Demonstrate group interaction skills.
  4. Recall and apply test-taking strategies in preparation for passing the GED®.
  5. Explore and apply study skill techniques.
  6. Apply problem solving skills to real-life math situations.

GED 005: Spanish GED

Credits: 5.00

This is a structured course to help Spanish-speaking students demonstrate competencies in civics and government, geography, history, economics, culture and society based on state guidelines. This course allows students to learn new comprehension skills in preparation for passing the official Spanish Social Studies GED® test. Completion of PREP 15 or advisor placement into GED 5 is recommended. 

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate improvement in one or more of the following areas: reading skills, basic communication skills, map and graphic skills, thinking skills, social participation skills.
  2. Assess and build upon current abilities, learning characteristics and styles.
  3. Read to deduce information from visual representations such as maps, charts, graphs, or pictures.
  4. Demonstrategroup interaction skills.
  5. Recall and apply test-taking strategies in preparation for passing the GED®.
  6. Explore and apply study skill techniques.

GED 007: Spanish GED

Credits: 5.00

This is a structured course to help Spanish-speaking students demonstrate competencies in advanced reading and comprehension. This course provides students with the opportunity to learn new reading and writing skills with analytical and contextualized lessons. Students also learn how to develop argumentative essays in preparation for passing the official Spanish Reasoning Through Language Arts GED® test. Completion of GED 5 or advisor placement into GED 7 is recommended.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate improvement in one or more of the following areas: writing and reading in preparation for passing the Spanish GED® Reasoning Through Language Arts test.
  2. Increase reading/writing scores on practice tests.
  3. Recall and apply test-taking strategies in preparation for passing the GED®.
  4. Identify and apply study skill techniques, such as note-taking strategies, recognizing main ideas, and supporting details.
  5. Apply reading and writing skills to produce argumentative essays.
  6. Demonstate group interaction skills including presentations.

GED 008: Spanish GED

Credits: 5.00

This is a structured course to help Spanish-speaking students demonstrate competencies in the basics of algebra, solving operations with rational expressions, evaluating binomials and polynomials, factoring, solving linear equations, and graphing linear equations. This course allows students to learn new problem solving skills in preparation for passing the official Spanish Mathematical Reasoning GED® test. Completion of GED 4 or advisor placement in GED 8 is recommended.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate improvement in one or more of the following areas: basics of algebra, solve operations with rational expressions, evaluate binomials and polynomials, factors, solve linear equations, and graph linear equations.
  2. Read, write, and interpret a wide variety of complex algebraic mathematical information.
  3. Demonstrate group interaction skills.
  4. Recall and apply test-taking strategies in preparation for passing the GED®.
  5. Explore and apply study skill techniques.

GED 009: GED

Credits: 15.00

A GED® preparation class that prepares students for the official Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science GED® tests, college classes, and current or future work. Prerequisite: Department orientation and advising are required before taking this course.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate improvement in reading and writing skills in preparation for taking the GED®.
  2. Practice group interaction skills.
  3. Recall and apply test taking strategies.
  4. Describe and apply study skill techniques.

GED 010: Advanced GED

Credits: 15.00

A fast-paced GED® preparation class that prepares students for the official Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science GED® tests, college classes, and current or future work. S/U grade option. Prerequisite: Department orientation and advising are required before taking this course.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate improvement in advanced reading and writing skills in preparation for taking the GED®.
  2. Apply test taking strategies.
  3. Identify and apply study skill techniques.
  4. Devise and implement the beginning stages of a career/academic plan.

GED 013: GED

Credits: 15.00

A GED® preparation class that prepares students for the official Mathematical Reasoning GED® test, college classes, and current or future work. Prerequisite(s): Prerequisite: Department orientation and advising required.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate improvement in math skills in preparation for taking the GED®.
  2. Practice group interaction skills.
  3. Recall and apply test taking strategies.
  4. Describe and apply study skill techniques.

GED 014: Advanced GED

Credits: 15.00

A fast-paced GED® preparation class that prepares students for the official Mathematical Reasoning GED® test, college classes, and current or future work. Prerequisite(s): Prerequisite: Department orientation and advising required.
