New Event Planning degree, online event planning classes for winter

This winter, start a degree in Event Planning at Edmonds College to gain specific skills that can be used on the job and open the opportunity to transfer to bachelor’s program in Hospitality Management. Take Event Coordination, Hospitality and Tourism 250, online, and Sustainable/Green Events, Hospitality and Tourism 245, online. Look for an Ecotourism class this spring. The classes can be taken individually or as part of a certificate or two-year degree program.
Jobs for meeting and convention planners are expected to increase 16 percent over the next ten years – faster than the average for all occupations — according to U.S. Bureau of Labor employment statistics.
Let’s say your family really wants you to go to college and get a bachelor’s degree, but you’re dreaming of exploring the world and possibly working at a travel agency, cruise line, tour company, or hotel.
A new degree in Hospitality and Tourism satisfies both requirements. The Associate in Applied Science-T (transfer) degree in Hospitality and Tourism is offered this fall at Edmonds College.
It is one of a growing number of degree programs that give students the option of beginning studies in the field of their choice immediately and preparing to enter the workforce, but also leaves the option open to pursue a bachelor’s degree, later, if they choose.
In the Hospitality and Tourism degree, students may begin taking classes in what interests them: learning about tours, travel geography, and how to make airline reservations. They can complete a certificate in nine months, which gives them an edge when looking for work, but also counts toward a two-year degree.
Upon completion of the degree, students have the option of transferring to South Seattle Community College’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Hospitality Management.
Other Associate in Applied Science-T (transfer) degrees at Edmonds College allow students to begin taking classes and gaining skills for careers in Early Childhood Education, Materials Science, Family Support Studies, Fire Officer, and Occupational Safety and Health.
Edmonds College’s Hospitality and Tourism department also offers a new two-year Associate of Technical Arts degree in Event Planning, which teaches students the practical and theoretical aspects of event and meeting management, including budgeting, coordination, promotion, and risk management.
