Spring Lecture Series Offers Dynamic Speakers

LYNNWOOD — This spring, the Edmonds College Lecture Series welcomes four dynamic speakers to campus, 20000 68th Ave. W. Lectures are free and open to the public.

The goal of the Lecture Series is to bring thought-provoking and inspirational speakers to campus. Each quarter, a committee of students, faculty, and staff invite influential scholars, artists, activists, and community leaders to campus to spark discussion and reflection in our community. Past speakers have included local best-selling author Timothy Egan and human rights advocate Van Jones.

All lectures are at the Black Box Theatre on campus.

Edmonds College Lecture Series:

"Sam Reed: I Will Vote 2012": Noon Tues., April 10. Washington’s Secretary of State, Sam Reed, visits campus for College Civics Week 2012 to discuss the importance of voting and being active in local and national issues.

"Kathleen Flenniken Presents Telling the Hanford Story: Finding a Form That Fits": 12:30 p.m. Tues., April 24. Washington State Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken presents her poetry collection, "Plume." Along with poems, the author will share some historic photos and talk about the role of poetry and the arts in addressing environmental and social justice issues.

"Running-Grass: Sustainability, Diversity and Social Justice": 12:30 p.m. Wed., May 2. Running-Grass, a widely published and nationally recognized expert in multicultural environmental education and environmental justice, will explore the intersections of environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and the roots of social justice movements.

"Bobby Norfolk Presents Shadowball: A History of the Negro Baseball League": 12:30 p.m. Wed., May 16. Three-time Emmy Award winner and internationally known storyteller  Bobby Norfolk presents a living history performance of the heyday of baseball's Negro Leagues. Historical slides and period music enhance this emotional performance, illustrating the clash of race, sports and culture.
