"From the Edge of Understanding," by Feven Haile, Melissa Newell, and Steven Oliver

Edmonds College’s art gallery this fall will feature work from Feven Haile, Melissa Newell, and Steven Oliver in a group exhibit titled “From the Edge of Understanding.” It opens Sept. 22 and continues through Dec. 5 in the college’s art gallery on the third floor of Lynnwood Hall, 20000 68th Ave. W.

A reception with the artists is 3:30-6:30 p.m., Fri., Oct. 17 in the college art gallery.

"From the Edge of Understanding" is a collaborative installation showcasing character narratives written by Haile, 100 mixed media images by Newell, and a movie created by Oliver.

Haile, an Edmonds CC alumna, is a poet and writer. Her writing, like pictures, can be a snapshot in time. Haile's appearances as a spoken word performer include the 2013 and 2014 Edmonds CC Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations and the YWCA's Stand Against Racism Rally and Minority Achievers Program in 2013, among others. She is studying acupuncture at Bastyr University this fall.

Newell has been an art instructor at Edmonds CC since 1989. Her work includes a variety of materials and surfaces and includes the use of mixed media such as paintings and clay sculptures.

Oliver is a musician, composer, and electronic media producer. Currently, he works in the Edmonds CC Visual Media Services department. Before working in electronic media production, Oliver worked as a musician playing percussion and the conga drums in local bands in New York City.

Together, these artists explore what it means to be a human interacting with other humans.

The exhibit is sponsored by the college's library, the Visual Arts department, and the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership.

The gallery is open 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday, and 1-5 p.m., weekends. For more information about the exhibit, call 425.640.1744 or visit online. See directions to the college.
