Edmonds CC Political Science and Economics students are top scholars

Edmonds College students Wilson Charles and Maria Veronica will be recognized for their scholarship, leadership, and community service at a ceremony at noon, March 26 at South Puget Sound Community College, in Olympia. Governor Jay Inslee will be the keynote speaker at the event.

Representing Edmonds CC, Charles and Veronica are among 65 of the state’s top scholars, representing 34 community and technical colleges in Washington state, who will receive recognition as members of the All-Washington Academic Team. Each two-year college in the state may nominate two students for the honor.

Wilson Charles is an Edmonds CC transfer student pursuing a dual Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Law, Society, and Justice at University of Washington. His GPA is 3.73. Wilson is 35 years old and married. His origins are in Haiti but he became a U.S. citizen in 2011. He is visually impaired, and determined to pursue a career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. State Department.

Maria Veronica is a 21-year-old Economics major and an Executive Officer for Technology in the Edmonds CC Student Government. With a 3.92 GPA, she is an Honor Roll and a Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society member. In the future, she hopes to achieve a Bachelor’s degree at a university, and continuously devote herself as an active member of society by contributing to impactful community efforts.

A place on the All-Washington Academic Team comes with a $250 scholarship from KeyBank of Washington. The top ranked member of the All-Washington Academic Team will be named the state’s New Century Scholar, receive a $2,000 scholarship and additional honors and scholarships as part of the All-USA Academic Team for community, technical, and junior colleges.

The Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges will also award three $1,000 scholarships to the second-ranked, third-ranked, and fourth-ranked members of the team. The Washington State Employees Credit Union is offering $250 scholarships to the fifth-12th ranked students. In addition, all of the state’s public four-year colleges and universities and most of the state’s independent colleges offer additional scholarships for academic team members who transfer to their schools.
