Differently-Abled Awareness Week offers wheelchair basketball, Paralympic keynote speaker

Edmonds CC celebrates Differently-Abled Awareness Week May 15-20 with a wheelchair basketball game, keynote presentation by a Paralympic athlete, movie night, and more.

Differently-Abled Awareness Week’s events are sponsored by the Edmonds CC Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), which helps students with all types of disabilities, such as those who are deaf, blind or visually impaired, have mobility or language issues, learning disabilities, or who have chronic health, neurological, psychological, or emotional conditions.

Schedule of events:

  • Wheelchair Basketball
    5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 | Seaview Gym
    Join us for a pickup game of wheelchair basketball, which provides people of all levels of ability the opportunity to compete. Free and open to the public.
  • Paralympic Keynote Speaker: Steve Ferreira
    12-1 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 | Black Box Theatre
    Ferreira won a Paralympic gold medal in discus and a bronze medal in shot put. He will present “Living a Disabled Life” followed by a Q&A. Free and open to the public.
  • Family Movie Night: Aladdin
    5 p.m. Thursday, May 18 | Woodway 202
    Doors open at 5 p.m. followed by special announcements at 6 p.m. The movie will start at 6 p.m., and there will be free pizza and snacks. Free and open to the public.
  • Seattle Mariners game
    4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20 | Safeco Field
    SSD has $13 view level tickets available for 25 students to attend the Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Socks baseball game.
