07/11/16

Edmonds Community College instructor Carol Garsi received a 2016 Distinguished Staff Award at the University of Washington’s 46th Annual Awards of Excellence ceremony on June 9 at Meany Hall for Performing Arts on the UW campus.

The awards honor members of the UW community who exemplify the university’s values with special distinction.

"I was very honored and humbled to receive the Award of Excellence," Garsi said.

Garsi has taught medical coding classes, BSTEC 118 and BSTEC 218, for Edmonds CC’s Healthcare Administration program for the past 10 years. She also is a member of the Business Information Technology (BSTEC) advisory board.

She holds a master’s degree in Education Learning and Technology, and is a registered health information technician and certified coding specialist.

Garsi was part of a four-member team that received the UW award for their work on a project involving a healthcare industry transition to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10), which is a clinical cataloging system that is owned, developed, and published by the World Health Organization.

“The team was nominated by the UW Medicine CEO as an industry leader in best practices for the ICD-10 transition,” Edmonds CC BSTEC faculty member Kathie Richer said.

Garsi’s role was to provide leadership in the area of coder and physician education. Sally Beahan, Sarah Lucas, and Becky Revand also were members of the team.
