master the inbox: five cold emailing tips for college networking

Let’s be real: while your DM game might be strong, email is still the way of the world when it comes to professional networking. Whether you're looking for an internship, trying to connect with an Edmonds College alum, or reaching out to a local business leader in Snohomish County, a solid email is your foot in the door.
But busy professionals get hundreds of messages a day. How do you make sure yours actually gets opened and read?
Inspired by tips from Instagram creator @aarondinin, here are 5 emailing rules every Triton should live by to build powerful professional connections.
1. Identify Good Prospects
Before you even start typing, you need to do your homework. Don't just blast emails to random people. Build a targeted list of professionals who are actually in a position to help you or share the insights you're looking for.
Triton Tip: Use LinkedIn to find Edmonds College alumni working in your target industry. They’re much more likely to reply to a fellow Triton!
2. Craft a Catchy Subject Line
Think of your subject line as the digital cover of a book—if it’s boring, no one is picking it up. Keep it short, concise, and professional, but interesting enough to stand out in a crowded inbox.
- Bad: "Question" or "Networking"
- Good: "Edmonds College Student seeking career advice" or "Loved your recent article on [Topic]!"
3. Keep it Simple (and Short!)
We live in a fast-paced world, and no one wants to read a novel from someone they don't know. Keep your email to 1–2 short paragraphs. State who you are, why you're reaching out, and what you’re proposing. Get in, get out, and tie it off with a polite "thank you."
4. Personalize It
Nothing gets deleted faster than a generic "copy-and-paste" email template. Make sure to tailor every message to the specific person you’re contacting. Mention a recent project they worked on, a post they shared, or a mutual connection. A little personalization shows you actually care about their work.
5. Have a Simple "Ask"
What is the ultimate goal of your email? Are you hoping for a 15-minute Zoom coffee chat? Asking about an internship opening? Keep your final request low-stakes and easy for them to say "yes" to. You don't need to lay out your entire life story or list all your intentions in the first message. Keep the ask simple, and let the relationship grow from there.
Put It Into Practice!
Networking can feel intimidating, but remember: most professionals love helping students who show genuine initiative. Take these tips, draft that email, and start building your network today!
