Triton Review editor and staff writer earn reporting honor

03/19/2009
Edmonds College students Peter Sessum and Valerie Topacio will receive Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards, honoring the best in student journalism, from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) for their work reporting for The Triton Review student newspaper. The awards will be presented at the SPJ Spring Conference, April 24-26 at the University of Montana.

The Mark of Excellence Awards honor 39 categories of print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. Triton Review Editor-in-Chief Peter Sessum will receive an award for general news reporting for his story, "The Silence of the Tritons," and staff writer Topacio will be recognized for sports writing for a story on the Rolling Tritons wheelchair basketball team.

First place regional award winners go on to national competition and national winners will be honored at the 2009 SPJ Convention and National Journalism Conference in Indianapolis. Sessum and Topacio will find out whether they are eligible to compete for the national award as well at the spring conference in April.

The Triton Review is a student-run newspaper that provides the opportunity for students to read about a broad range of on- and off-campus news and events. Those who wish to become involved as reporters are welcome. Writers are always needed. The Review is published twice-monthly beginning the third week of each quarter and is distributed to several locations throughout the campus.
