ACCT& 201: Principles of Accounting I

Credits: 5.0

Introduction to the theory and practice of financial accounting. Topics include: completion of the accounting cycle, preparation of financial statements for service and merchandising companies. Minimum placement into AENGL 93 or ENGLP 93 and completion of ACCT 101, high school bookkeeping or instructor permission.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) that govern final accounting including the Principles, Assumptions, and Constraints for preparing financial statements.
  2. Recognize, classify and record transactions in journals using proper formats.
  3. Record accounting transactions for merchandising operations and understand how to cost inventories using a variety of methods.
  4. Journalize transactions specific to managing cash and accounts receivable.
  5. Record transactions for uncollectible accounts using generally accepted accounting principles.
  6. Prepare financial statements for service and merchandising companies including income statements, statements of retained earnings, and balance sheets.
  7. Calculate and explain the significance of liquidity and profitability ratios.

ECON 120: General Economics

Credits: 5.0

A survey of economic principles applied to a wide range of social problems. Domestic markets, government intervention, inflation, and the global economy are all considered.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Apply supply and demand analysis to a variety of examples.
  2. Calculate how firms maximize profits.
  3. Describe the determinants of aggregate spending and multiplier effects.
  4. Explain and demonstrate how the tools of fiscal and monetary policies affect the economy.
  5. Use comparative advantage to explain the role of foreign trade.

BUS 130: Business Mathematics

Credits: 5.0

Instruction and review of basic math functions to prepare students for business classes. Ratio-proportion, percents, estimating, basic algebra, trade/cash discounts, promissory notes, credit terms, and other consumer related activities. Transfer limited. Recommended completion of MATH 47 or PREP 47 or equivalent with a grade of 2.0 or higher, or appropriate score on Math Placement Test, or advisor recommendation. Recommended placement into AENGL 93 or ENGLP 93.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Solve word problems using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  2. Convert fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions; convert fractions and decimals to percent.
  3. Estimate answers by rounding.
  4. Solve equations for unknowns.
  5. Solve word problems using simple algebraic equations.
  6. Using percentages, apply the portion formula to solve business problems.
  7. Calculate single and chain discounts, cash discounts, credit terms, and partial payments.

ENGL& 111: Introduction to Literature

Credits: 5.0

This class explores ways that writers portray human experience in their short stories, poems and plays. Through class discussions, lectures and creative responses, students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of literary works. Prerequisite(s): Placement in ENGL 99 or instructor permission.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of literary concepts by identifying and describing the formal elements, techniques, genres, and cultural/historical context of literary works.
  2. Reason clearly by applying critical reading methods/theories to analysis of texts in order to understand, interpret and draw conclusions.
  3. Describe and explain ways texts shape and are shaped by cultural/historical contexts and trends.

ENGR& 114: Engineering Graphics

Credits: 5.0

Methods of depicting three-dimensional objects and communicating design information. Emphasis is on using parametric solid modeling software as a design tool and using freehand sketching to develop visualization skills. Prerequisite(s): Placement in MATH 87 or higher.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Demonstrate the ability to use pencil and paper for visualization and sketching of solid models.
  2. Demonstrate computer added design (CAD) parametric solid modeling.
  3. Complete a project that demonstrates both sketching and CAD design.

DIVST 125: Race and Ethnic Relations: CD

Credits: 5.0

The study of past and present relations between race and ethnic groups in North America and the effects of immigration on these relations. Focus on causes, forms, and consequences of race and ethnic inequality as well as on resistance strategies. Prerequisite(s): Placement in ENGL& 101 or instructor permission. Crosslisted as: SOC 125.

Explores journalistic theories and the roles of journalism in societies, including market and cultural influences. Prerequisite(s): Placement in ENGL& 101.

  1. Develop and evaluate mathematical models for business using linear, quadratic, exponential, simple rational, and logistic functions in symbolic, graphical, written, and numerical representations.
  2. Perform basic function operations.

General nature of functions. Linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Applications. Prerequisite(s): Completion ofMATH94,MATH97, PREP 94,or PREP 97 with a minimum grade of 2.0; satisfactory completion ofMATH11; or appropriate placement. Students with completion ofMATH87 with a 3.0 or higher or placement intoMATH97 are eligible forMATH& 141with concurrent enrollment in MATH11.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Solve problems involving the concept of a function and the related concepts of domain, range, symmetry, composition, and inverses using functions given in graphical, symbolic, or numerical form.
  2. Graph (with and without the aid of technology) linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions and interpret these graphs, identifying, locating, and communicating important graphical features.
  3. Use algebra to determine the real and complex zeros of polynomial and rational functions and be able to relate this information to their graphs.
  4. Solve equations and inequalities involving involving linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions using both graphical and algebraic methods, as well as technology.
  5. Use the aforementioned functions to model situations described in words and solve applied problems.
  6. Correctly use mathematical notation and language related to the concepts mentioned above.

MATH& 142: Precalculus II

Credits: 5.0

Continuation of MATH& 141. Trigonometric and inverse-trigonometric functions, conic sections, parametric equations, polar coordinates, vectors, and applications. Prerequisite(s): Completion of MATH& 141 with a minimum grade of 2.0 or appropriate placement.

Course Level Objectives

  1. Evaluate trigonometric functions at values given in radians or degrees, using both right-angle and unit-circle approaches.
  2. Identify and communicate important features of trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions (including domains, ranges, symmetry, periods and graphs) and important graphical features of conic sections.
  3. Solve trigonometric equations using trigonometric identities, inverse trigonometric functions, algebra and technology.
  4. Prove trigonometric identities.
  5. Translate between graphical and algebraic representations, between the Cartesian and parametric representations of equations and graphs, and between polar and rectangular coordinates.
  6. Recognize and sketch graphs of equations given in polar coordinates.
  7. Perform vector operations, including vector algebra and dot product.

Introduction to statistical methods and applications: organization of data, sampling, testing hypotheses, confidence intervals, regression, and correlations. Prerequisite(s): Completion of MATH 84, MATH 87, PREP 84, or PREP 78 with minimum grade of 2.5; completion of MATH 94, MATH 97, PREP 94, or PREP 97 with minimum grade of 2.0; satisfactory completion of MATH 10, MATH 11 or MATH 16; or appropriate placement; and placement into ENGL& 101. Students with completion of MATH 77 with a 3.0 or higher or placement into MATH 87 are eligible for MATH& 146 with concurrent enrollment in MATH 16

Introduction to differential and integral calculus. For students in business or other programs requiring a brief course in calculus; not for math or science majors. Prerequisite(s): Completion of MATH 140 or MATH& 141 with minimum grade of 2.0 or appropriate placement.

  1. Find slope, average rate of change, and instantaneous rate of change from a graph, equation, or data.
  2. Estimate and calculate slopes of secant and tangent lines.

Limits, continuity, derivatives and applications. Differentiation of algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric and inverse-trigonometric functions. Prerequisite(s): Completion of MATH& 142 with a minimum grade of 2.0 or appropriate placement.

  1. Solve problems involving the concept of a limit using symbolic, graphical and numerical techniques.
  2. Solve problems involving the concept of the derivative using symbolic, graphical and numerical techniques.
  3. Interpret the meaning of the derivative in various contexts.
