I'm a native of Seattle, married, and have four adult children. All of my children
were born while I was in graduate school. This experience has made me very sympathetic
to students with busy lives outside of school. I also come from a large multigenerational,
multiracial, and multicultural family. This experience helps me be curious and open-minded.
I'm interested in exploring the complicated social histories of things that we often
take for granted and assume are "natural," including the concepts, categories, and
myths that shape our thinking. Why, for instance, do we often think and act as if
"nature" and "society" were separate realms of being? And where do our notions of
race, class, and gender come from? Why do traditional ways of thinking hold such sway,
and what are some alternatives? Since how we think and act is often ingrained in the
words we use and the stories we tell, I always encourage my students to explore not
only WHAT is presented but also HOW it is presented, whether in writing or film.
Students often tell me that my classes are "engaging" and "fun" and that my teaching
is full of "energy," "enthusiasm," and "love" for the subject-matter. Students also
tell me that they find my teaching style "welcoming," "caring," "flexible," and "responsive"
to their needs. My hobbies include running, playing piano, and spending time with
my family.
