Guide to Emergency Preparedness: Lockdown

A lockdown is used when a serious threat exists to the campus that requires students, employees and visitors to remain in a locked area for safety.

What To Do

  1. Notify anyone in open spaces or hallways to move to a safe location.
  2. Close and lock doors. For non-locking doors, block door if possible.
  3. Turn off all lights.
  4. Stay silent and silence the ringer and vibration on any electronic devices.
  5. Stay away from windows.
  6. Stay in the lockdown area until directed to leave by emergency responders.

What Not To Do

  1. Do not respond to a fire alarm during a lockdown unless you see a fire or smell smoke.
  2. Do not open doors; emergency responders will have keys.
