Chemistry 161 Placement Test

Students interested in taking Chemistry 161 must pass the placement test for this course before registering.

What are the Enrollment Requirements?

Chemistry 161 enrollment generally requires completion of one of the following:

  • Passing CHEM& 121, CHEM& 139, or Chem& 140
  • Passing the Chem& 161 Placement exam
  • Getting 1 year of high school chemistry with a grade of 2.0

In addition to one of the above, students must have

  • Math& 141 (2.0 grade minimum) or concurrent enrollment
  • Eng& 101 placement.

Exam Details

  • What's on the exam? The exam covers basic atomic structure (protons, neutrons, and electrons), basic stoichiometry, density, metric conversions, and the concepts of moles/grams/Avogadro's number.
  • How long will it take? There is no time limit for this test; however, it typically takes between 1 and 3 hours to complete.
  • Is there a fee? There is a $10 test fee. You may take this test once per quarter.
  • What is the passing score? You must achieve a score of 15 out of 20 to pass.

What to Bring to the Exam

  • A valid Photo ID (e.g., Driver's License, EdPass, or Military ID).
  • Your scientific calculator.
  • A periodic table (this will be provided for you if you take the test on campus).
